This easy and delicious superfood smoothie bowl will give you energy that is sustained throughout your entire day. Many people, especially Pitta imbalanced body types experience a short term coffee high. Drinking several cups throughout your day just to feel a short term burst of energy followed by an afternoon crash, only to find yourself trying to stay awake with another cup of coffee.
Superfoods are a class of the most potent, super concentrated, and nutrient rich foods on the PLANET. Superfoods have the ability to increase the vital force and energy of one’s body and are the optimum choice for improving overall health.
Here is a detailed description of the superfoods contained in this smoothie and the amazing benefits that each superfood offers:
Cacao – Is the nut of a fruit from an Amazonian tree. It is one of the highest antioxidant foods on the planet, even higher than green tea and red wine. Raw chocolate improves cardiovascular health, elevates your mood, increases longevity, and supports strong bones. Unlike cocoa, cacao is a raw food that retains enzymatic and vitamin content. It is also a great source of magnesium, iron, manganese, and fiber. (I love to use a cacao and reishi mushroom blend found at your local health food store)
Goji berries– Have been used for over 5,000 years, and have been known for their anti-aging and anti-cancer benefits. Goji berries have also been known for supporting neurological and reproductive health. Just one ounce of goji berries offers three grams of protein and is also high in iron, riboflavin, vitamin c, and selenium.
Maca – Increases energy, endurance, supports cognitive function, and protects from osteoporosis. Maca is also a good source of fiber and contains five times more protein than a potato. Maca is a staple in the Peruvian Andes for thousands of years and is an adaptogenic superfood.
Spirulina – Provides protein, phytonutrients, minerals, and trace elements. Spirulina is the world‘s highest vegetarian source of complete protein. This superfood helps improve blood sugar control, reduces blood pressure, and also helps maintain a healthy cholesterol level.
Bee pollen – Powerful source of vitamin E, B vitamins, folic acid and polyphenols. Also known to support immunity through improving the immune response, reducing inflammation, and acting as an antibacterial and anti fungal compound.
Reishi – Mushrooms are high in polysaccharides and immune-enhancing components. Medicinal mushrooms are a highly adaptogenic superfood that may help halt the formation of cancer cells and reduce symptoms of inflammatory diseases.
Beetroot – Beets have been known to improve athletic performance because of the levels of nitrates encouraging blood flow throughout areas of the body including the respiratory system and muscles. Nitrates also support the cell’s energy source > mitochondria. The betalain in beets serves as a powerful tool to help your liver detoxify itself to function more efficiently.
Flax seeds – Loaded with nutrients such as omega 3 fatty acids, thiamine, fiber, protein, and copper. Flaxseed contains nutrients called lignans that may help decrease cancer growth.
Blueberries – Are known to have the highest antioxidant capacity of all of the other popular fruits and vegetables. Easily digested at the same time as reducing DNA damage, which helps protect against anti-aging and cancer.
Coconut milk – Is an anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anti-fungal because of a type of lauric acid, which is converted in the body into a highly beneficial compound called mono lauren. Coconut milk also supports cardiovascular health and may also reduce stomach ulcers.
I typically add 1 tsp of each ingredient into a blender with one cup of blueberries, half cup coconut milk, and 1/4 cup of water. Consistency is of your choice so add or subtract liquids as you choose!
You can find most of these ingredients at your local health food store, especially blueberries, I always recommend all organic, as well as unsweetened coconut milk. If you are not able to find the powdered form of these superfoods in store, I always stand by David Wolfe and his amazing products. His website is linked here.
